Reverend James L. Dubar Bio

CH (CPT) James L. Dunbar is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. Embracing the challenge of higher education, Dunbar
obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Florida A&M University in
Tallahassee, Florida. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, North
Carolina and is in pursuit of his Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Phillips School of Theology at the
Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dunbar is an ordained Elder in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME). Totaling over 23 years in pastoral
ministry, he has served in the church as a Presiding Elder where he supervised and mentored pastors. He also
served as the Senior Pastor of Young Laymen Temple CME Church (Greenville, South Carolina), Greater Cleaves
Memorial CME Church (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) and Interim Senior of Beebe Chapel CME (Guthrie, Oklahoma).
On December 7, 2021, Dunbar was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army Reserve and serves as
Head Chaplain of the 457th Chemical Battalion HHD, Greenville, South Carolina. Chaplain Dunbar is currently a
resident chaplain at the Spartanburg Medical Center Hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
During his downtime, he enjoys spending time with family, reading, playing games, and going out on the golf
course. His favorite scripture is Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not to your own
understanding; in all of your ways acknowledge God, and God shall direct your paths. (NKJV)
Married to his friend and love (of 25.3 years), Lakesha, they are the proud parents of two wonderful young men:
Joshua, a scholar alumnus of Paine College and Josiah, an aspiring college student. Mentoring to many, he has
embraced Charles Dodd, whom he raised and considers his son as well. He is an active member of the NAACP and
life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and he also serves many youth and young adults as a
father/big brother figure; as well as serving pastors, and community leaders as a mentor.
Dunbar has always served the community of the marginalized. His interests in equality, equity and unity have
positioned him into servant-leadership on several Boards and Committees within the surrounding communities.
His greatest achievement is not in the accolades received along this journey, but in the fact that he knows he is
born again. If there is one thing that he would want you to know about him, he would simply tell you that he is a
child of God.
